Answer

Comparing equation 3x2 - x - 7 = 0 with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get :

a = 3, b = -1 and c = -7.

By formula,

x = b±b24ac2a\dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}

Substituting values we get :

(1)±(1)24×3×(7)2×31±1+8461±8561±9.2261+9.226,19.22610.226,8.2261.70,1.37.\Rightarrow \dfrac{-(-1) \pm \sqrt{(-1)^2 - 4 \times 3 \times (-7)}}{2 \times 3} \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{1 \pm \sqrt{1 + 84}}{6} \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{1 \pm \sqrt{85}}{6} \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{1 \pm 9.22}{6} \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{1 + 9.22}{6}, \dfrac{1 - 9.22}{6} \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{10.22}{6}, \dfrac{-8.22}{6} \\[1em] \Rightarrow 1.70, -1.37.

Hence, x = 1.70, -1.37
