According to equation of motion —

v = u + at

Given,

u = 20 m s-1,

v = 0,

t = 5 s

Substituting the values in the formula above, we get,

0=(20)+(a×5)0=20+5a20=5aa=205a=4ms20 = (20) + (a \times 5) \\[0.5em] 0 = 20 + 5a \\[0.5em] \Rightarrow -20 = 5a \\[0.5em] \Rightarrow a = -\dfrac{20}{5} \\[0.5em] \Rightarrow a = - 4 ms^{-2}\\[0.5em]

Hence, Retardation is 4 m s-2
