The area of a trapezium is 540 cm2. If the ratio of parallel sides is 7 : 5 and the distance between them is 18 cm, find the length of parallel sides.

Given,
Area of trapezium = 540 cm2
Ratio of parallel sides = 7 : 5
Let the sides be 7x and 5x cm.
Distance between the parallel sides = height = 18 cm
By formula,
Area of trapezium = × sum of parallel sides × height
⇒ 540 = × (7x + 5x) × 18
⇒ 540 = × 12x × 18
⇒ 540 = 6x × 18
⇒ 540 = 108x
⇒ x = = 5 cm.
⇒ 7x = 7 × 5 = 35 cm and 5x = 5 × 5 = 25 cm.
Hence, the length of parallel sides are 25 cm and 35 cm.
