Sir Syed Ahmad Khan took the lead in the establishment of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental Defence Association in 1893. The object of the Anglo-Oriental Defence Association was to promote loyalty towards the rulers and to prevent Muslims from participating in any political movement.
