Chemistry
Sulphur has an atomic number of 16 and a mass number of 32. State the number of protons and neutrons present in the nucleus of sulphur.
Answer
Given,
Atomic number (Z) = 16 and
Atomic number = number of protons in the atom of an element.
Hence, number of protons = 16
Mass number (A) = 32 and
Mass number = number of protons and neutrons
Hence, number of protons and neutrons = 32
Number of Neutrons = A – Z = 32 – 16 = 16
Hence, Number of Neutrons = 16
