Answer
(i) Carbon dioxide
Sources :
- Burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and petroleum.
- Industrial processes like the manufacture of lime and those seen in fermentation units.
- Biological decay of plants.
- Respiration by animals, humans beings and plants.
Effects :
- Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.
- It has the largest contribution of about 50% towards greenhouse effect.
(ii) Methane
Sources :
- Anaerobic decomposition of organic matter in soil, water and sediments.
- Incomplete combustion of fossil fuels.
Effects :
- Methane is a greenhouse gas.
- It has the second largest contribution of about 19% towards greenhouse effect.
(iii) Water vapour
Sources :
- Burning of hydrocarbons.
- Evaporation from water bodies.
- Transpiration from plants.
Effects :
- Water vapour is a greenhouse gas.
- It contributes 2% towards greenhouse effect.
