Answer
(i) The given equation is 4x2 - 5x - 3 = 0
Comparing it with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get a = 4 , b = -5 , c = -3
By using formula, x=2a−b±b2−4ac
we obtain:
⇒x=2×4−(−5)±(−5)2−4×4×−3⇒x=85±25+48⇒x=85±73⇒x=85+73 or 85−73 Also 73=8.54 (From tables)⇒x=85+8.54 or 85−8.54⇒x=813.54 or 8−3.54⇒x=1.69 or −0.44
Hence roots of the given equations are 1.69, -0.44.
(ii) Given,
⇒2x−x1=7⇒x2x2−1=7⇒2x2−1=7x⇒2x2−7x−1=0
Comparing it with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get a = 2 , b = -7 , c = -1
By using formula, x=2a−b±b2−4ac
we obtain:
⇒x=2×2−(−7)±(−7)2−4×2×−1⇒x=47±49+8⇒x=47±57⇒x=47+57 or 47−57 Also 57=7.549(From tables)⇒x=47+7.549 or 47−7.549⇒x=414.549 or 4−0.549⇒x=3.642 or −0.142x=3.64 or −0.14 (Correct to two decimal places.)
Hence roots of the given equations are 3.64, -0.14.
