If the empirical formula of two compounds is CH and their Vapour densities are 13 to 39 respectively, find their molecular formula.

Empirical formula is CH
Empirical formula weight = 12 + 1 = 13
Vapour density (V.D.) = 13
Molecular weight = 2 x V.D. = 2 x 13
∴ Molecular formula = n[E.F.] = 2[CH] = C2H2
Similarly,
Empirical formula is CH
Empirical formula weight = 12 + 1 = 13
Vapour density (V.D.) = 39
Molecular weight = 2 x V.D. = 2 x 39
∴ Molecular formula = n[E.F.] = 6[CH] = C6H6
