Why does gaseous exchange continue in the lungs even during expiration?
Answer
Not all air is expelled from the lungs during expiration. A certain volume of air (about 1500 ml), known as the residual volume, remains in the lungs after a normal breath out. This residual volume maintains some oxygen in the alveoli, contributing to continued gaseous exchange.
