- The colourless nitric oxide formed, on oxidation gives reddish brown nitrogen dioxide
2NO + O2 ⟶ 2NO2 - The platinum [catalyst] continues to glow even after the heating is discontinued since the catalytic oxidation of ammonia is an exothermic reaction.
