Calculate the mass of :
(i) 1022 atoms of sulphur.
(ii) 0.1 mole of carbon dioxide.
[S = 32, C = 12 and O = 16 and Avogadro's Number 6 × 1023]

Answer
(i) gram molecular mass of S = 32
6 × 1023 atoms weigh = 32 g
1022 atoms will weigh = x 1022 = 0.533 g
(ii) 1 mole of carbon dioxide weighs = C + 2(O) = 12 + 2(16) = 12 + 32 = 44 g
∴ 0.1 mole of carbon dioxide weighs = 44 x 0.1 = 4.4 g.
Hence, mass of 1022 atoms of sulphur = 0.533 g. and mass of 0.1 mole of carbon dioxide = 4.4 g.
