(b) 2NaCl (aq) + 2H2O (l) ⟶ 2NaOH (aq) + Cl2 (g) + H2 (g)

  • NaCl ⟶ Na+ + Cl-

  • 2Cl- ⟶ Cl2 + 2e- [At anode]

  • H2O ⟶ H+ + OH-

  • 2H+ + 2e- ⟶ H2 [At cathode]

  • Na+ + OH- ⟶ NaOH

Other products formed are sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Uses of Sodium hydroxide:

  • Degreasing of metals
  • Preparation of soaps and detergents
  • Paper making
  • Artificial fibres

Uses of Hydrogen:

  • Fuel
